How fast can I drive with chains?Updated 10 months ago
30 MPH is the maximum speed with tire chains.
At speeds faster than 30 centrifugal force lifts the chain off the tire and causes it slap the pavement accelerating wear.
For example:
If the chains are as tight as possible:
At 30 mph you get maximum chain life.
At 40 mph… 57% of the chain life
At 50 mph… 31% of the chain life.
If the chains are loose:
At 30 mph you get 50% of chain life.
At 40 mph… 16% of the chain life
At 50 mph… 7% of the chain life.
