Shortening Tire ChainsUpdated a year ago

If tire chains are too long for your tires, making a shortening adjustment ensures they fit securely and function properly. Here are the steps to adjust the length of tire chains:

Materials Needed:

  • Tire chains
  • Bolt cutters,  heavy-duty pliers or chisel
  • Chain tensioners (optional but recommended)

Steps to Shorten Tire Chains:

  1. Prepare the Chains:

    • Lay the chains flat on the ground and untangle them. Ensure they are properly oriented as they would be when fitted on the tire.
  2. Measure the Chains:

    • Drape the chains over the tire to determine the excess length. Ensure the chains are centered and evenly distributed on both sides of the tire.
  3. Mark the Excess:

    • Mark the side chain links that need to be shortened/ removed. Be conservative at first; you can always remove more links if necessary.
  4. Remove Excess Links: Be sure you removing excess chain on the side that does not have the locking mechanisms on

    • Use bolt cutters,  heavy-duty pliers or a chisel to cut the excess side chain links.
  5. Reconnect the Chains:

    • If your chains have a connection mechanism (like a hook or fastener), ensure it's positioned correctly and securely fastened after adjusting the length.
  6. Install the Chains:

    • Fit the adjusted chains onto the tires according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure they are snug and properly positioned.
  7. Tension the Chains:

    • Use chain tensioners to secure the chains tightly. Tensioners help keep the chains tight and prevent them from slipping off the tire.
  8. Test the Fit:

    • Drive a short distance to test the fit. Check the chains for tightness and readjust if necessary.

Additional Tips:

  • Safety First: Always wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges and cold weather.
  • Check Clearance: Ensure there is enough clearance between the chains and the vehicle components to avoid damage.
  • Inspect Regularly: Periodically check the chains during use to ensure they remain secure and properly tensioned.

By following these steps, you can effectively shorten tire chains that are too long, ensuring they fit securely and provide optimal traction.
